KNOW HER NAME

I’ve often wondered, what if we did a similar motorcade for women and children each time they were murdered?  We would have had 48 of them just last year.

“Have you ever attended the amazing, heartfelt motorcade of a military solider who has been killed?  It’s the most heart wrenching thing to watch, as people gather on the sides and bridges of the 401 to pay their respects.  As we should.  I truly admire this show of support to our troops and wish for a day when we never have to have another one of these motorcades for soldiers.”

“I’ve often wondered what if we did a similar motorcade for women and children, each time they were murdered?  We would have had 48 of them just last year.” Vanessa Falcon (ED, Herizon House)

This excerpt was from a talk given two years ago at an event hosted by the Violence Prevention Coordinating Council, highlighting the epidemic of silence around violence against women.

Unfortunately we haven’t got to the stage of motorcades for every woman murdered by a man. And we don’t yet have the technology to make tribute to each femicide as in the film the Hunger Games.

The very least we can do is know her by name.

The following is a list of the women who have been murdered because they were women. A list of 20 Femicide victims in Ontario from January 1, 2021 to May 31, 2021, compiled by OAITH (Ontario Association of Interval & Transition Houses). Note the 8 Unconfirmed Femicides are still under investigation and being monitored by police.

Please share this post so others will know their names. They were real women. Women, whose lives have been taken too soon. They are missed by their families, friends and communities.
